Values




When I showed my post about what Republicans want to a friend he said the Republicans are adrift. They have no VALUES. They stand for nothing. This jibes with my claim that all they do now is promote hate and fear for votes. Sadly, that works.

So, here’s a document outlining the values/position of the progressive caucus of the house of representatives. It’s lengthy and detailed. It uses action verbs to express actual goals.

I decided to look for Republican values and compare them to that list of Progressive Values.

First of all here’s a pretty lame explanation of why the RNC decided to forge ahead with NO PLATFORM IN 2020.   

And notice that last bit: RESOLVED, That any motion to amend the 2016 Platform or to adopt a new platform, including any motion to suspend the procedures that will allow doing so, will be ruled out of order

On to their values.  Well, here it is. It's pretty short.

Republicans believe in liberty, economic prosperity, preserving American values and traditions, and restoring the American dream for every citizen of this great nation. As a party, we support policies that seek to achieve those goals. 


Comment: American values and traditions. Hmmm…which ones? Some Americans celebrate Ramadan, some Chinese new years, some are atheists, ….which are the ‘American’ ones. All? 

 
Our platform is centered on stimulating economic growth for all Americans, protecting constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms, ensuring the integrity of our elections, and maintaining our national security. We are working to preserve America's greatness for our children and grandchildren.


Comment: ’Greatness’ - such an arbitrary word. Yes, the greatest country in the world unless you measure by gun deaths or by infant mortality, or by prison population, or by hate crimes, or, or, or. Maybe time to stop these empty slogans and say what you mean.

 
The Republican Party's legacy -- we were originally founded in 1854 for the purpose of ending slavery -- compels us to patriotically defend America's values. As the left attempts to destroy what makes America great, the Republican Party is standing in the breach to defend our nation and way of life


Comment: First of all, I think the Republican party originated to stop the spread of slavery in new territories not to 'end slavery'.  And, that said, what position does the party take NOW to work against racism and inequality. 

‘As the left attempts to destroy what makes America great’. Again. Exactly what is it that makes it great and what do you think is being done exactly to destroy it?

 This whole thing reads like a script for high school pep rally. The entire Republican stand is devoid of content. Just more jingoism and chest pounding.

 Congratulations half of America. You've gotten a convicted felon elected president. Nice one. Know that this is a first and by a long shot. Well, Donald at least we’ll always have Paris

 Or not. Once again Trump as dropped US out of the Paris Climate Accord. He tried this once before but then there was a 4 year wait before you could be officially dropped so he just forgot about it as he tends to do. Now there is only a one year wait to be officially dropped. Interestingly, his announcement doesn’t even mention Paris. He has started something called, “Putting America First in the Climate Agreements”. (PAFCA?) It’s not clear what this even means or what the plans are. He does say that his Putting America first blah, blah, blah … will include, “Make America affordable and energy dominant again," including "by reviewing for rescission all regulations that impose undue burdens on energy production and use. Well that’s pretty clear. Sounds like support for oil and gas to me. The Boys from January 6

These guys are all getting presidential pardons:   Who was their leader? Who said, "On to the Capital". How many people were injured or killed? Who was president at the time and didn't call out the National Guard? Is this the America you grew up with. And yet. . .and yet, you elected HIM president.  If you think something good will come of putting him back in office . . .how deluded half of us are. Actually a little less than half again.
